First German Sport Club Phoenix to host Gerhard Mengel O30 Cup Final

TREVOSE, The sport club claiming roots in 1926 is one of the top amateur clubs in Eastern Pennsylvania and will not only be playing against the teams from Regions I and II but will play host to the final four. Phoenix Sport Club is located in Trevose, Pennsylvania and their grounds include two soccer fields, a swim club, and a clubhouse. Region II will be represented by the Carpathia Kickers of Michigan, Region III will be represented by CD Motagua of Louisiana. In addition Safira Soccer of Massachusetts, the Region I  finalist, has been invited to round out the finals.

The cup dates to 1984, however it’s namesake has a history in soccer in this country going back to the 1950s. Gerhard Mengel was a playing coach and manager of the Carpathia Kickers beginning in 1958. He took that team to the 1962 US Amateur Cup Championship and brought home that title for the club. Mengel went on to touch every aspect of soccer in Michigan, from founding soccer clubs, to founding and working with leagues referee associations and also competitions. He served as the National Cups Committee chair from 1997 to 2001. In 2005, Mengel was awarded the US Soccer Federation’s highest honor in the Werner Fricker Builder Award.

  • 10:00am – Third Place Match
  • 12:00pm – Championship Final
